The Short of It

I am currently an Assistant Professor of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. I work in the Center for Theoretical Physics, focusing my research on the Large Hadron Collider experiment at CERN. Once upon a time I played tenor sax, but I switched to upright bass when I found out that “String Theory” was going to revolutionize particle physics.

We eagerly await data from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and we anticipate that LHC data will provide hints for what physics lies beyond the Standard Model (BSM). In studies that explore how accurately the LHC can determine the parameters of a specific BSM scenario, it is found that the LHC can often achieve a remarkable level of precision.

Summer 2004 - Spring 2006

The hypothetical Higgs boson is responsible for generating masses for almost all of the fundamental Standard Model particles. For theoretical consistency, the Higgs boson must be lighter than 1 TeV, but a naïve quantum calculation suggests that the natural mass of the Higgs boson should be closer to 1016 TeV than 1 TeV, a discrepancy known as the “hierarchy problem.” By far the most popular mechanism for explaining the lightness of the Higgs boson is supersymmetry (SU…

[Symmetry Breaking]

Spring 2004 - Fall 2005

In 1886, Michelson and Morley conducted an experiment that proved that there was no “luminous ether.” The idea that light waves could propagate without a propagation media contradicted everything that was known about wave physics at the time, but this crucial realization was the foundation of Einstein's theory of special relativity. In essence, if there is no ether, then there is no preferred rest frame in the universe, so all non-accelerating observ…

The principle of naturalness asserts that quantum corrections should be not much larger than semi-classical expectations. Naturalness is not needed for the theoretical consistency of particle physics, but in the past, apparent breakdowns of naturalness have often been resolved by discovering new natural theories of the universe.

[Deconstructing Dimensions]

Summer 2003

I participated in a reading group led by Nima Arkani-Hamed exploring three topics in Beyond the Standard Model Physics: Cosmology, Extra Dimensions, and Supersymmetry.

The Standard Model of particle physics is an incredible triumph for theoretical physics. Within a mathematically consistent framework, it explains all known subatomic interactions up to the energy scales of current particle accelerators. It provides excellent predictions about the comp…

There is some information about joining my group. If you have further questions, send me an email.

Why a wiki?

Though I loved my old black and white webpage, I never got around to editting it much. In the wiki format, editing and viewing pages take the same amount of work, so my innate narcissism will drive me to actually make updated content. Or at least that's the hope...
